LifeWishGuardian is a simple way to record what you want for your care, in your own voice. You can do it on your own. Soon, a son or daughter can sit with you and ask the questions. Either way, the words are yours, and you choose who gets to hear them.
•On your own
Record on your own
This is how the app works today. Open it, choose what you want to talk about, and record a short answer. One question is enough. You can always come back for another.
Step 1
Choose a subject
On the Choose a subject screen, questions are grouped under My Care, My Values, My Treatment, and My Wishes. Pick one that feels right to start, such as “Who should make decisions if I can’t?” or “What does quality of life mean to me?”
Step 2
Record your answer
Tap record and speak to the camera the way you would speak to your family. Say what matters to you. A short answer is plenty.
Step 3
Re-record if you want
If the first take does not sound like you, tap Retake and try again. Keep the version you want people to hear.
Step 4
Save it securely
When you are happy with it, save the video. It is stored securely, and it stays private until you decide to share it.
•Interview mode
Coming soon
Sit together and talk it through
Some wishes are easier to say with someone you love in the room. Interview mode is built for that. An adult child holds the phone and asks. A parent answers, looking at the camera, in their own words. It is a conversation, not a performance.
Parent
On the camera side. The video shows only them, answering in their own words.
Back camera films the parent
The phone
In the middle. The back camera faces your parent. The screen faces you, with suggested questions.
Screen shows questions to ask
Adult child
On the screen side. They read the prompt and ask it out loud. Their voice stays in the audio.
The phone sits between you. Your parent is on the camera side, and that is who the video shows. You are on the screen side, where the suggested questions appear. You ask each one out loud, and your question stays with their answer.
What ends up in the video
Playback shows your parent. It does not show the person holding the phone. You still hear the question, because it was spoken aloud and kept in the audio. Later, a brother, a spouse, or a care team can watch an answer and know what was asked. If you want the words on screen too, you can turn on a caption for each question. That option is off by default, so the saved video stays clean.
A simple way through it
Step 1
Set up
Sit somewhere you can both be comfortable. The adult child holds the phone between you, with the back camera facing the parent and the screen facing themselves.
Step 2
Pick topics
Choose the subjects you want to cover. They are the same kinds of questions already in the app — care, values, treatment, and wishes — so you are not starting from a blank page.
Step 3
Ask
A suggested question shows on the screen. The child asks it out loud, in a natural voice. There is no need to rush.
Step 4
Record
The parent answers. The camera films only them. The child’s spoken question is captured in the audio, so the answer plays back in context.
Step 5
Review
Watch the clip together. If either of you wants another try, re-record that answer before you move on.
Step 6
Share with family
When the video feels right, share it with the family members you choose. Nothing is shared until you say so.
A few things that help
A quiet, well-lit room
Soft light on your parent’s face, and as little background noise as you can manage, makes the video easy to watch later.
Steady the phone
Rest it on a book or a table, or hold it with both hands, so the picture stays still while they talk.
Take breaks
Pause between questions. A few short videos are easier on everyone than one long sitting.
Their own words
Let your parent answer in their own words. The prompts help you ask. They are not a script for the reply.
•Sharing
Share with the people you choose
A saved video is private. You decide who can watch it. Share with family members, and with the care team you want in the conversation — a spouse, an adult child, or the people who would speak for you. Only those people can see it.

•Questions
A few questions families ask
Is this a legal document?
No. A video in LifeWishGuardian complements a legal advance directive. It does not replace one. The video is how your family hears what you want, in your own voice. For paperwork a hospital or court will rely on, use the advance directive process where you live.
Who can see my videos?
Only people you share them with. You choose the family members and the care team. A saved video stays private until you share it.
Can I re-record or update later?
Yes. You can retake a video, or record a new answer, whenever your wishes change. Save the version you want your family to have.
Can the question appear on the video?
Only if you turn it on. In interview mode, each question can show as a caption on the saved video. The option is off by default, so the picture stays clean.
